I know I’m not the only one who goes out with intention of “only having one drink” and then ending up at 3am, with a pizza in one hand, heels in the other, after downing one too many shots and knowing full well my skin will be paying for it in the morning. But with these fail-safe tips to perk up your face, you need never fear the visible effects of your hangover again, making you look (but not feel) as fresh as a daisy!
1. Get hydrated
When you first wake up you will probably be very dehydrated. That’s the downside to drinking lots of alcohol, so you need to replenish your body quickly. Try and drink as much water as you can before you go to sleep and treat your skin to some hydration too. Try a refreshing facial mist such as Caudalie Grape Water Spray, £6, there’s really nothing better than cooling down a hot, puffy face and this does the trick by soothing your hungover face. Follow it up with Khiels Ultra Facial Cream, £24, for some deep hydration and to bring a bit of life back into that skin.
2. Sort those eyes
Your eyes will show how much fun you had last night, so if you had a good time, they’re likely to be red, puffy and bloodshot, not to mention the bags. Thankfully there are a few simple ways you can wipe away the evidence of a heavy night out. Start with Elemis Pro-Collagen Hydra-Gel Masks, £47.50, for those pesky dark circles, and if your eyes are really sore, brew some green tea bags in hot water, put them in the fridge and then apply them to your eyes. I usually go for green tea if my eyes are really sore and red, leave them on for 15 minutes (lying down should help that headache!) and then feel refreshed.
3. Colour correct
Your skin will probably be mimicking Mr Blobby at this point with patches of red, green and yellow, meaning you need some serious colour correction, and fast. Greens eliminate red while red combats purple. The Yves Saint Laurent Touche Eclat Neutralizers, £25, are perfect for all your colour correcting needs, so conceal those colours and then blend your foundation as normal with a damp sponge or brush.
4. Get back your glow
Highlight, highlight and highlight! It will make you look instantly refreshed and glowing, nobody would be able to guess that you feel like curling up into a ball and sleeping forever. Use Benefit’s Watts Up, £24.50, to give softly blended highlights on your cheekbones, nose and cupids bow. You can also use it in the inner corner of your eyes slightly to make them appear more awake and open, when they really aren’t.
5. Use the right tools
Most people will notice your hangover by looking at your eyes, even if you have de-puffed and de-bagged them, they are probably going to give you away. To avoid that, you need to have an army of tools that will guarantee that if anyone wants to stare into your eyes they’ll have no idea that you feel like crap. You’ll need a white or nude eyeliner pencil for your waterline, try Lancôme Le Crayon Miracle, £16.50, this will immediately open up your eyes and make them seem less red and tired. Follow up with a good pair of eyelash curlers and a trusted mascara like Maybelline Lash Sensational, £5.99, mascara and your eyes will no longer give you away!
6. And finally
If you can stomach the thought of food the next day, don’t drive to McDonald’s or fry some bacon, these will most likely you feel worse, despite what you’re craving.
